ARTIST’S STATEMENT

By Irene Diaz

Every person has a story to tell; more often it is interned deep inside the person’s memories. What is the burden that keeps a person from narrating his or her own story? The usual story is the one of humanity. Personal stories are most often of shame inducing events and dreams unfulfilled.

I too have a story to tell like everyone else. I have been exposed and blessed by two cultures. With life’s experiences I have had my share of ups and downs. Through the medium of photography I now have the satisfaction of achieving my dream to narrate my memories. What I could not say in words I now say with photography. Just like writing authors express their feelings with words, I communicate by writing with light, according to the true meaning of the Greek word “photography.”

Photography has given me an endless process of self-discovery by narrating my memories. The joy has been in the journey. Reaching the top of the needle and pushing The Thread through the tiny hole has been difficult, but with perseverance and motivation anything is possible. Today The Thread is sewing another web that will catch the elements to narrate more stories for other generations to come.
